Originally from the Lowcountry of South Carolina, Alex and the rest of the influential Murdaugh family have been at the forefront of the local legal community for generations. As a matter of fact, the five-county district is sometimes referred to as “Murdaugh Country” since three members of the same family have held the office of solicitor continuously from 1920 to 2006.
Where is Alex Murdaugh now?
Murdaugh’s six-week trial for the June 7, 2021 murders of his wife and youngest son began on January 25, 2023. In a startling turn of events, Murdaugh testified in his own defense on February 23, claiming jurors he was innocent.
Murdaugh testified, “I did not shoot my wife or son, at any time, ever.” He testified that he had lied to police about where he was on the night of the shootings. At an earlier stage of the trial, the prosecution submitted a video that appeared to show Murdaugh at the family property around the time of the murders.
He told his loved ones he was sorry for giving false information to the police. “What a tangled web we weave,” he exclaimed on the witness stand. “Once I told a lie — and then I told my family — I had to keep lying.” urdaugh, however, vowed that he would never intentionally harm his loved ones. “I would never intentionally do anything to hurt either one of them — ever,” he stated before the jury.
Murdaugh’s surviving son, 26-year-old Buster, testified in his defense as well, describing the moment he saw his father for the first time following the murders. “His demeanor was destroyed, he was heartbroken,” Buster Murdaugh told jurors on Feb. 21. “I walked in the door and saw him and gave him a hug and just broke down.”
Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and youngest son after the jury debated for almost three hours on March 2. On March 3, he received a life sentence in prison. Murdaugh’s attorneys have appealed his sentence, and also filed a motion for a new trial in September, stating they had unearthed evidence of jury tampering.
In March, South Carolina’s Department of Corrections revealed that Murdaugh was being held in the state’s maximum security prison. His cell has a bed, toilet, and basin, and is located in a secure area of the jail away from the general inmate population.
Is Alex Murdaugh in jail?
The trial for the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh began on January 25, 2023, and took an unexpected turn on February 23, when Murdaugh took the witness stand and pleaded not guilty. Murdaugh admitted to lying to police during his testimony about where he was on the night of the shootings.
Despite admitting he had lied to his loved ones, he said he was innocent and promised he would never hurt them again. The jury deliberated and reached a verdict finding Murdaugh guilty of murdering his wife and children. He was subsequently given a life sentence on March 3, 2023. The lawsuit, however, reversed course in September of 2023.
His legal team has filed an appeal and a demand for a new trial, alleging newly uncovered evidence of jury tampering. Murdaugh is presently being imprisoned in a maximum-security facility in the Palmetto State of South Carolina. His cell is in a secure area of the prison that is not shared with the other inmates.
