the Mean Girls musical movie is near. Since its 2004 debut, this teen comedy classic has had a whole generation in its stranglehold. In addition to the movie, there will soon be a Broadway musical based on the film. Yes, this is kind of like another episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, except with a little less meta.
A film version of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical Mean Girls (sometimes known as a reboot) has been in the works since at least 2020. The film is now in production and will hit theaters sooner than you think; here is all the information you need to know about the film up to that point, including the cast, release date, and more.
When is Mean Girls coming out?
Mean Girls was originally slated for a Paramount+ direct release, but on September 22, 2023, Deadline revealed that the picture would instead open in theaters on January 12, 2024, to coincide with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend.
What will the Mean Girls musical movie be about?
Like the original film from 2004, the new musical Mean Girls will center on Cady Heron, a high school freshman who spent her formative years in the African savanna with her two study zoologist parents. Cady, after plotting with the “outcasts,” tries her hardest to be accepted by Regina George’s reigning trio The Plastics at North Shore High.
However, as it’s adapted from the 2018 Broadway musical, you should anticipate a lot of the dialogue and plot development to come through songs. Tina Fey wrote the screenplay, book, and book for the musical movie adaptation of Mean Girls, which will be co-produced by Lorne Michaels and directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne.
Fey hinted on Late Night with Seth Meyers that the film’s music would be far more “pop” than the musical’s. She went on to explain that whereas on Broadway performances must be geared toward an audience at the rear of the theater, in the movies the audience can sit closer to the action. We have a great director and a fantastic choreographer. It’s going to turn out wonderfully.
Fey also confirmed to Meyers that filming on Mean Girls began on March 6, 2023, and that production on the film concluded in New Jersey in late April or early May.
Who is in the Cast of the Mean Girls Musical Movie?
Angourie Rice, an Australian actress, will play Cady Heron in the upcoming Mean Girls musical film. She played Betty Brant in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films, so you might remember her. Moana star Auli’i Cravalho and Tony and Grammy nominee Jaquel Spivey will play Janis and Damian on Broadway.
Reneé Rapp, a veteran of Sex Lives of College Girls, will reprise her role as Regina George in The Plastics. (On Broadway, she previously portrayed the legendary character.) Bebe Wood (Love, Victor) will play Gretchen, and Avantika Vandanapu (who appeared briefly on SLOCG) will play Karen.
American Born Chinese’s Mahi Alam will play a new version of Kevin G, whose last name is Ganatra rather than Gnapoor, and The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Christopher Briney will play Aaron Samuels. However, that’s not the end of the recognizable cast members.
Deadline reports that Connor Ratliff, a comedic actor, will play a new teacher character named Mr. Rapp, and that rom-com favorite Busy Phillips will play Regina’s mom, Mrs. George; Jenna Fischer, from The Office, will play Cady’s mom, Mrs. Heron; Mad Men’s Jon Hamm will play Coach Carr; and more.
On top of all that, Ashley Park, one of the original Broadway cast members who stayed until the show closed — and whom you might recall from Emily in Paris — has also joined the cast in a new role as a teacher titled Madame Park.
