The first trailer for the long-awaited sequel Hocus Pocus 2 has finally been released, and it will be in theatres just in time for Halloween.
The Sanderson Sisters are back to cause trouble in Salem, Massachusetts, almost 30 years after the first Hocus Pocus movie came out. The release date for Hocus Pocus 2 has been confirmed by Disney.
The first movie is a beloved cult classic, and while many legacy sequels feel like shameless cash-in on nostalgia, it’s hard not to get excited about a return to Salem. We can’t wait to see what the Sanderson Sisters have in store for us when they come back, so here’s what you need to know about Hocus Pocus 2.
Hocus Pocus 2 Release Date
At Disney’s presentation of “upfronts” in May 2022, it was confirmed that the sequel will be on Disney+ on September 30, 2022. The second movie was shot in Rhode Island from October 18, 2021, to late January 20, 2022.
Now, all we can do is wait for Hocus Pocus 2, but you can always watch the first movie again on Disney+ to fill that witch-shaped hole in your life. Unless something unexpected comes up, it looks like the sequel will be able to cast its spell on us later this year.
Hocus Pocus 2 cast
Bette Midler pretty much said in October 2020 that she, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, who played Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, would all be back for the sequel.
We had to wait until May 2021 to find out for sure that the same actors would be back as the witchy trio, but the movie wouldn’t have been the same without them.
We don’t think Thora Birch will be back as Dani Dennison because she had to turn down a role because of her busy schedule. She said in May 2022, “Everyone tried so hard to make that happen, but it just didn’t,” but everyone did try so hard.
We still don’t know if Max and Allison, played by Omri Katz and Vinessa Shaw, will come back.
In March 2022, Katz talked about whether or not the OG stars are coming back: “I’ve talked to a lot of fans today, and it’s clear that they’re really upset that we’re not involved. I could be lying, though. Everyone is in it! We might not be. Maybe we are!”
We do know that Sam Richardson from Veep is in the sequel, but we don’t know who he’ll be playing yet. Even the trailer doesn’t tell us much, except that he’s either a shop owner or a librarian in some kind of occult store. He’s been making fun of the fact that he likes Hocus Pocus as much as the rest of us.
“To work with the ladies is… I’m not myself when I do these scenes,” he told ET. “This is them!” I think. The Sanderson Sisters are over there casting spells, which makes me smile.”
Disney announced more new cast members on Halloween 2021. Richardson’s Veep co-star Tony Hale will be joining the sequel, as will Game of Thrones star Hannah Waddingham and Ted Lasso, both in unspecified roles.
Waddingham won’t say much about her part, but like Richardson, it’s clear that she loves Hocus Pocus as much as we do.
“When I went to Rhode Island for my fitting, the second assistant director told me, “All the women would like to meet you.” I really couldn’t believe it. I went there and sat with them while they were dressed up. Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler, and the powerful SJP, “Variety,” she said.
In the first teaser, we haven’t seen her or Hale, who seems to be playing Salem mayor Jefry Trask.
Doug Jones is back as Billy Butcherson, and the cast announcement also said that Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham, and Belissa Escobedo will play Becca, Cassie, and Izzy, three teenagers who become the Sanderson Sisters’ targets.
The rest of the cast is made up of Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez, Taylor Henderson, and Nina Kitchen. We don’t know who they’re playing, though.
There will also be drag versions of the Sanderson Sisters by three queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Sarah Sanderson will be played by Kahmora Hall. Mary Sanderson will be played by Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté, and Winifred Sanderson will be played by Ginger Minj.
Behind the scenes, Jen D’Angelo wrote the sequel, and Adam Shankman was going to direct it at first. Due to Shankman’s work on Disenchanted, there was a scheduling conflict, so Anne Fletcher took over. Shankman will stay on as an executive producer, though.
Hocus Pocus 2 Plot
Those first story tidbits from the sequel were released along with the official announcement in May of 2021.
“Three young ladies unwittingly summon the Sanderson Sisters back to modern-day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from spreading a new type of havoc on the globe,” it reads.
Poppy, the daughter of Max and Allison, has a crush on a girl named Isabella, and this story sounds a lot like the book sequel that came out in July of last year.
While trying to impress Isabella, Poppy sneaks into the Sanderson home under a blood moon and mistakenly revives the Sanderson sisters. Non-canonical: It’s not certain if this is exactly what will happen in the movie sequel.
There was a magical book that appeared to wink its eye at the end of the first film (spoiler alert), indicating that the witches could return… Ooo0ooo000ooOOOoo.
As long as we don’t know much more about the sequel, it’s comforting to know that the returning performers are praising it. In November 2020, Midler commented, “We looked at [the script] and I think all of us agreed that it was very excellent.”
No worries, there will be at least one musical performance like the memorable ‘I Put a Spell on You’ scene in Hocus Pocus 2. The sisters performed Elton John’s ‘The Bitch Is Back’ at Disney’s upfronts presentation, which we can’t wait to see.
Hocus Pocus 2 Trailer
Yes, and it’s available to view again right here. On June 28, 2022, a trailer and a poster were released to coincide with the premiere of the film.
In the past, we had a small sight of the returning sisters and the first look at their new roles. Disney+’s 2022 teaser contains exactly one second of footage, so you could loop that as well.
May 2022 saw Disney’s introduction of “upfronts,” and it was announced that the sequel will premiere on Disney+ on September 30, 2022. From the 18th of October, 2021, through the 20th of January, 2022, filming took place in Rhode Island for the sequel.
To fill the need until Hocus Pocus 2 comes out, you can always watch the first film again on Disney+. It appears that the sequel will be able to weave its spell on us later this year unless anything unforeseen occurs.
