To commemorate the studio’s 100th anniversary, Disney is preparing to produce Wish, a self-referential fairy tale about the power of wishing. The plot revolves around Asha (West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old who wishes upon a star to save the kingdom from the tyrannical King Magnifico (Chris Pine), a magician who has the power to decide which wishes can come true.
When Asha summons Star, a cartoony cosmic power, chaos ensues. The film also tries to pay homage to Disney’s past by mixing a hand-drawn look reminiscent of classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio with CGI animation.
“I think with Wish, what we were realistic about with ourselves is based on where we are technologically, the schedules, what we do,” Disney’s chief creative officer Jennifer Lee told IndieWire. “We’re not going backward from the power of CG and what it’s given us, but we’re really pushing to make sure that hand-drawn is included.”
“Every frame is constructed layer upon layer.” “And the end goal for me was to get Lisa Keene’s artwork to reverberate and ultimately become not just three-dimensional but genuinely animated.”
When asked if Disney would ever produce a project that was entirely hand-drawn, she replied, “We might.” But I’m not sure. There’s nothing to say we wouldn’t. But it’s a different approach to construction. It’s a different approach. It’s a separate manufacturing system.
“We recognize all of those things, but we don’t want to be afraid of them, so we must carry on that legacy.” What excites me is that we are witnessing a celebration of the reality that animation is not here to copy live. “It’s here to transfer you so that you can succumb to this entirely different universe.”
A trailer for the film was previously released, showing fans a song by Ariana DeBose, a hilarious voice performance by Chris Pine, and a first look at the film’s use of 2D and 3D animation. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Wish, including when it will be released.
